Finding Self-Care

Everywhere we turn, we’re reminded to make time for self care. Whether it’s advice from a friend, a gentle nudge from your doctor, or a post on social media, the message is clear: caring for yourself helps you care for others. Even on airplanes, we’re told to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping anyone else. But in the midst of busy days, how do we actually make this happen? Why does it always feel like there just isn’t enough time?
​Start by noticing the simple things that bring you comfort. Think about the basics—good food, a cozy sweatshirt, a safe place to land at the end of the day. Maybe it’s your favorite morning coffee, curling up under a soft blanket, or snuggling with your pup. These small moments of comfort are ways I remind myself that I’m cared for, and they can be the foundation of your own self care, too.

Next, think about what helps your body feel rested and cared for. Maybe it’s getting a good night’s sleep, soaking in a warm bath, or moving your body in a way that feels good—like walking, yoga, or biking, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Start small and let it grow. For me, it began with a short walk with my pup each morning, just ten minutes at first, and now it’s become a cherished twenty-minute ritual. There’s something grounding about stepping outside before the world wakes up, watching the sunrise, and feeling the quiet promise of a new day. It’s a gentle way to set the tone and look forward to whatever comes next.
Consider what you’d like to do for yourself each day or week, and actually put it on your calendar. We wouldn’t cancel plans with a friend, so why cancel on ourselves? One of my favorite rituals is my bi-weekly nail appointment at Polished Nail Studio, right after work on Fridays. I’ve been going for over a decade, and the women there always bring a little extra joy to my week. We catch up, share stories, and laugh together—it’s my guaranteed time to connect and recharge. Having my nails done helps me feel a little more put together, even on the busiest days. My family knows: the nail appointment is non-negotiable!
And maybe most important of all, how do you care for your mind? What are you choosing to watch or read? Just like nourishing your body, the information you take in shapes how you feel. It’s easy to get caught up in endless scrolling or quick distractions, but when was the last time you simply sat with your own thoughts? It can feel a little intimidating at first, but giving yourself that space is a powerful way to understand what you truly need to feel your best.​
For me, Hot Yoga quickly became a space where I could truly let go. I used to tell everyone it was the only time my mind would quiet down—the heat, the breath, and the movement gave me so much to focus on that everything else faded away. As my practice grew and I began teaching, I discovered how much meditation and restorative yoga could add to my self care. I think many of us look forward to savasana at the end of class, that moment to pause and rest. It’s a chance to reflect, to let your mind wander, and maybe even reframe your thoughts about the day. Even if you didn’t get everything done or it was a struggle just to show up, you can find a sense of peace and acceptance. Sometimes, giving yourself that rest is exactly what helps you move forward.
