Metal Yoga in Pittsburgh: How Music and Movement Became My Therapy

I still remember the summer of my sophomore year of high school, climbing into my boyfriend’s truck for my very first metal concert. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew it would be wildly out of my comfort zone. The first time he played me Iron Maiden in his 1980 blue Scout, I felt torn between love and resistance. The sound was primitive, chaotic, and yet something deep inside of me wanted to bang my head until my earrings flew out the window.

That muggy, rain-soaked night at Starlake changed me. We’d scored seats under the awning instead of the lawn, and as Bruce Dickinson stepped onto the stage, everything clicked. The power of the music coursed through me, thickening my blood and igniting something raw. As I raised my first set of metal horns, I realized I had found an outlet — a place where my inner rage could live safely, where music could help me process heavy emotions. From then on, metal became my therapy.

From Metal to Yoga

Fast forward ten years, and I found yoga during an abusive breakup. I’d blare metal in my car before class, letting the guttural riffs shake loose the anxious, angry energy inside me. My friends laughed, saying, “You’re the only person who uses death metal as a pre-yoga de-stressor,” but it made perfect sense to me. Both metal and yoga had become my healing practices.

Six months into my practice, I entered yoga teacher training. On the first weekend, when our teacher asked what we wanted to do with our training, my answer was immediate: “I want to introduce Metal Yoga to Pittsburgh.”

It raised eyebrows, but the vision was clear: combine the music that had carried me through my darkest moments with the practice that taught me to transform pain into power. I curated bands I loved, songs that spoke to the deepest parts of me, poses that built strength and resilience, and even guttural screams to release stagnant energy.

The Birth of Metal Yoga in Pittsburgh

In 2016, Metal Yoga came alive. The first classes were packed, and the energy was electric. People from every walk of life showed up to try something bold and unconventional. Not everyone fell in love with it, but everyone walked away with a unique experience.

Metal Yoga isn’t just about headbanging in a yoga pose — it’s about giving yourself permission to release what’s buried inside. It’s about transforming rage into rhythm, chaos into catharsis, and pain into power.
